8 Reasons to Stop EU Mercosur

The EU-Mercosur deal will drive deforestation in the Amazon and other crucial ecosystems and carbon sinks. The deal would also boost carbon emissions caused by the agro-industry sector.

The EU-Mercosur deal will favour big agribusiness, deepening inequalities and unfair competition for small-scale, family farmers, in Europe and in Latin America.

The EU-Mercosur deal will benefit the agri-business which heavily relies on the use of toxic pesticides, harming farmers, consumers and nature. Many pesticides produced by big European corporations are banned in the EU but widely used in Mercosur countries. Fruits and vegetables contaminated by those toxic chemicals are exported back to EU supermarkets.

The deal was negotiated behind closed doors over the course of 25 years, with very little transparency or public input, and ignoring the voices of Indigenous Peoples, farmers, labour unions, affected communities and civil society. Despite massive protests in Europe and the opposition of several national parliaments and governments, the European Commission wants to fast-track the ratification process. This manoeuvre aims to bypass vetoes from member states and prevent national parliaments from having a say.

The EU-Mercosur deal will increase land grabs, violence and forced displacement of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, as corporations expand their activities to meet unsustainable trade demands.

The EU-Mercosur deal will boost the agribusiness sector and increase demand for beef, soy and other commodities that are the main drivers of deforestation. The expansion of mining activities will worsen pollution and cause serious environmental damage.

The EU-Mercosur deal will prioritise corporate profits over the protection of people and the environment, making it easier for multinational corporations to exploit resources and workers.

The EU-Mercosur deal will lock Mercosur countries into exporting raw materials and commodities (like soy, beef, minerals) while the EU exports high-value industrial goods, reinforcing an unfair and unequal trade system.
